Box Magazines

The box magazine is the most common magazine in the world. Rounds stack in a single or double column inside a box, pushed up by a spring and follower. It shows up in nearly every modern pistol, the AR15, the AK47 and most bolt and semi-auto rifles.

Single stack vs. double stack

Single stack magazines hold one column of rounds, like the 1911. They are slim and easy to carry. Double stack magazines stagger two columns and hold twice as much in a slightly wider grip, like the Glock 17.

Detachable vs. fixed

Most box magazines are detachable for fast reloads. Some rifles use a fixed internal box loaded from the top.
